Tips on decorating your dining room

The family room might be where everyone gathers to relax and play board games or watch television, but we dare say that the dining room is where all the important memories are made. It is where the family shares about their day and makes decisions together as they sit down to a meal; it is where guests congregate for good food and even better company during a dinner party; and on special occasions such as birthdays or Christmas, it plays host to your entire menagerie of friends and extended family.

That makes it a really important room in our book, and whether you have a large, formal space for your dining room or just a cosy corner tucked to one side, there are definitely ways that you can decorate your dining area so it truly reflects your family. Looking to give your dining room a makeover? Here are some tips from our property styling experts:

1- Get creative with the lighting

A lighting fixture that makes a statement works well to mark the dining area as its own space, separating it from the adjoining family room or kitchen. If designer lighting or chandeliers are not quite your thing, how about a simple drum shade in a bright hue for a pop of colour, with accents that complement the rest of the dining room décor.

2- Let your walls speak for themselves

Gone are the days when all you had to do to create a stylish look and feel was paint one of the walls a different colour. While you can still do that, as it will instantly transform the tone of the space, why not go one step further and explore options such as unusual wallpaper, a floor-to-ceiling, wall-to-wall painting or mural, textured wall coverings, or even paint your walls in a striped design, perhaps?

3- Put on a display

The dining room is a great place for you to display your collections, whether it is china, vintage teapots, or even music records. Instead of keeping them stored away in a box or cabinet somewhere, get them out, dust them off, and make them a part of your dining room decorations.

4- Don’t forget the ceiling

Here’s a wild idea: decorate the ceiling! Sometimes referred to as the fifth wall, ceilings are something most people would never dream of touching, and unless you really have a dining room, as opposed to just a dining area, you probably should not. But if you can, adding architectural details such as rustic beams, or getting a unique design or some custom artwork painted on is sure to elevate your room from drab to fab.

5- Let your personality shine through

Do you love the ocean? Are you extraordinarily fond of wildlife? Make your dining room uniquely yours by injecting personal touches into the décor, whether it is a favourite painting of the ocean or a one-of-a-kind animal sculpture. Just remember to make sure that it complements everything else, and does not stick out like a sore thumb.

6- Mismatched isn’t always a bad thing

Ready for something that is a little more “out of the box”? Make your dining seating unique yet cohesive with different chairs that have a unifying element. For example, you might have chairs in different shapes and designs, but that all have the same kind of upholstery. Or you might have a variety of different chairs that are in the same style, and that have all been painted the same colour. This is where you let your creativity shine through, so go ahead, have a bit of fun with it.
