5 Tips for creating the perfect family room

The family room is where the entire family gathers to relax, read, play games, watch television, listen to music and generally spend time together. It is a pretty important room in the house, and you definitely want to make sure it serves its purpose.

The family room should be a welcoming, cosy retreat from everything else, and should even be a sort of neutral ground where every member of the family feels at ease and comfortable with themselves and with each other. Family dynamics aside, you can help to set that tone through the right home styling, and achieve the perfect family room for your household. Here are some tips:

1. Pick Warm Colours

Save the elegant, designer shades for the living room; warm, inviting colours such as red, brown and orange are the way to go when it comes to the colour palette for your family room. And if you feel like injecting a little vibrancy to the mix, add items in bright colours such as yellow and aqua.

2. Get The Configuration Right

It seems obvious, but the configuration of your furniture should promote conversation and allow everyone to gather and hang out. A great way to achieve that is by arranging the furniture in a U-shaped configuration, facing the television of course.

3. Choose Low Maintenance And Kid-Friendly Furnishings

The family room is meant to be a lived-in space, and if you have children, you will know that means it is going to get more than its fair share of dirt, crayon marks and fingerprints. Keep everything as low maintenance as possible, whether it is in your choice of flooring (timber is a good option) or in your furnishings. That includes everything from hardy leather sofas or sofas that can be easily cleaned, to cushions, slipcovers, throws and rugs that you can simply throw into the washing machine. Practicality might be key, but that does not mean you have to sacrifice on looks and style – shop around for pieces that you like, bearing in mind the main purpose of a family room.

4. Keep It imple

One of the easiest ways to create a welcoming space is by keeping things as easygoing and simple as possible. Fuss-free designs such as a casual, modular sofa and a basic entertainment unit will help to make your family room the informal space it is meant to be, and do try to position your furniture in such a way that it frees up as much floor space as possible. Instead of heavy, elaborate curtains, choose simple blinds for a clean, modern and low maintenance look.

5. Don’t Forget Storage

Having ample storage is probably the most effective and practical way of keeping your family room neat and tidy. Make sure there are plenty of shelves for books, board games, magazines and other items, nice boxes that you can stack or put away in a corner for the kids’ toys, crayons and colouring books, and that your entertainment set comes with shelves for gaming units, games, DVDs and the like. If you are feeling a little adventurous, you might also want to get yourself one of those coffee tables that come with built-in storage, which are great for hiding away all the little bits and pieces – pencils, notepads, a forgotten to-do list, etc. – that come with a bustling, active family.
